I'm in the AmazonWhen people ask me how my trip was, I'm never quite sure how to respond. "It was so good!" just doesn't seem to cut it. It was amazing. It was an absolute dream-come-true, and then some. It was everything I hoped for, but nothing I really expected. I'm not sure what I expected, to be honest.<br />
<br />
It took us around 3 days to actually get to our destination.
By that time we were all tired and grumpy and desperately in need of a
good night of sleep, a shower, and a change of clothes. Stepping off that plane in
Iquitos was one of the best feelings ever. The air was warm and thick
and I was IN THE AMAZON RAIN FOREST! <br />
<br />

<br />
The lodge we stayed at was a 1 1/2 hour boat ride down river from the
city of Iquitos. Heliconia and it's staff was incredible. They fed us
the most delicious meals, cleaned our rooms, escorted us around the
jungle, washed our clothes, extended their usual hours of electricity, and even kept watch all night long in case an
animal decided to jump through our screen windows (don't worry, that
never happened). It felt luxurious in the middle of the jungle. <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our very first visit to the village was unforgettable. As our boats approached the village, we saw a crowd of people on the shore waving and smiling. A group of guys were off to the side playing music for us. Everyone greeted us, shook our hands, and gave us gifts. A cute teenager walked up to me handed me a fan made of palm leaves and said in English, "This is for you". It was such a whirlwind, that I didn't even remember who that guy was or think it was cool that he knew a phrase in English.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We had Opening Ceremonies inside their community building. The school children sang songs, recited poems and danced for us. We sang a few embarrassing songs like "Getting to Know You" from The King and I, and "Fifty Nifty United States", one of those songs you sang in the 5th grade program, you know?? The whole time I had two things on my mind: "holy cow, it's hot in here. Good thing someone just gave me a fan" and "how are these kids are so stinking cute?!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The first little boy I met was named Hevinger. He's 10 years old (if I remember correctly) and kind of shy. Yet he sort of understood my attempt at speaking Spanish and that made any feelings of unease disappear. I must have been nervous to interact with the kids because of the language barrier. Very quickly I learned that you don't really have to use many words to have fun with kids. There are so many other ways to connect. They would often laugh at my Spanish, then try to help me say the right thing. </div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That day I also took a little tour of the village and got to see the building they were planning on turning into the medical clinic. It was about half a mile from the community building, and a very beautiful walk. We passed many houses and properties, a farm, their only water tower, and a fish pond. The clinic building was a mess; much worse than we had imagined. It is a small building, but one of only a few cement and brick buildings that exist in the village. There were 4 small rooms and a bathroom and it even had hookups for electricity. The plaster on the walls was chipping off, the rooms were streaked with bat guano and the new ceilings were stained as well. That was my first of many lessons that things rarely go according to plan. Our plan was to paint, furnish and stock the clinic, and because of other needed repairs, we never even got all the way done painting. </div>

After that first day in the village, I wrote in my journal:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>I can already tell that I'm going to be absolutely exhausted by the end of this trip. If a few hours of singing and walking around can wear me out, I don't know what I'll do with so many days of work and construction. But still, It was so fun to meet all the people in Yanamono. I'm overwhelmed by their kindness and the warm welcome that they gave us. </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It definitely was exhausting. But it was really so much more than that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stay tuned. There's more to come!</div>

Also, disclaimer: I am NOT a photographer and I probably never will be, so forgive my not-so-good snapshots of an over-active little toddler with a fairly cheap camera.<br /><br />The real reason I'm posting is to show you my serious crafting skills...<br /> a princess crown and a princess tutu!<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5j2HR55uFI7A3Q7j0do-Ug-muS_98vX4zLixcD_rsojSS1bfbWAzhTpvkBanVE-LbIXXK2htH1alaIhlbb73BNCisnfezf-W8kLn5lurV31zlppqYEC-xaD-HGnrROjjsi7BDH15R2MA4/s1600/IMG_0755.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 282px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5j2HR55uFI7A3Q7j0do-Ug-muS_98vX4zLixcD_rsojSS1bfbWAzhTpvkBanVE-LbIXXK2htH1alaIhlbb73BNCisnfezf-W8kLn5lurV31zlppqYEC-xaD-HGnrROjjsi7BDH15R2MA4/s400/IMG_0755.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636103662980346674" border="0" /></a>Oh my goodness, I had so much fun with this project! Partly because I had someone specific in mind and I was so excited for her to put it on, but also because it was pretty easy.<br />after looking through the countless tutorials online, I came up with my favorite combination of techniques and details and even added some of my own.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4s_RhCgV5VUpElO0dUu2M56lqjpESNv09PXFm1cIJBg7oypAHX31IQl9t1aqs4EBfqyBDzT2jb2ym9phiowbpXuln5zYBY2WARWZKcd4gVWKT1YnFxJDNvcqrXHaJShX5yC6FuuFyJbxa/s1600/IMG_0758.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4s_RhCgV5VUpElO0dUu2M56lqjpESNv09PXFm1cIJBg7oypAHX31IQl9t1aqs4EBfqyBDzT2jb2ym9phiowbpXuln5zYBY2WARWZKcd4gVWKT1YnFxJDNvcqrXHaJShX5yC6FuuFyJbxa/s400/IMG_0758.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636103666918944018" border="0" /></a>Now that I think about it, I should have taken some detail shots before I gave it to her... that way you could see the sparkly buttons and the cute trimming. Oh well. You get the idea.<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU-mPO6IgYktFnDd1WtIJOQg_htMTEgYFtAKYmecGsw1Voh2nDAIcThJNZ5lbczfy9Xewp-OnOYsiZOZc4BPAdN3JLHw8-gqfBH54CYjkHuJGKYF2Dh6yLFnHmSLxFvZHlpUHiPZSuFz-R/s1600/IMG_0756.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU-mPO6IgYktFnDd1WtIJOQg_htMTEgYFtAKYmecGsw1Voh2nDAIcThJNZ5lbczfy9Xewp-OnOYsiZOZc4BPAdN3JLHw8-gqfBH54CYjkHuJGKYF2Dh6yLFnHmSLxFvZHlpUHiPZSuFz-R/s400/IMG_0756.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636103671284197810" border="0" /></a> I sure do love this little monkey.<br /><br />Happy Birthday Tess!!!<br /><br />On a side note, I guess this is a good chance to announce that this little girl has a new baby sister named Ruby! we call her Ruby Roo. (like how Scooby Doo would say his own name.) I find that quite hilarious.<br /></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00243850300323787879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204520592898014030.post-28614930840217677572011-07-23T13:09:00.006-06:002011-07-29T11:57:30.947-06:00HCH4Since I have such an awesome job and everyone is jealous of all the gross things I have to do there, I decided that I should share some stories so that you feel like you are there.<br /><br />You know you want to keep reading...<br /><br />So this month was a strange one, but I guess its always a strange month on Huntsman 4th Floor.<br /><br />Two people died unexpectedly in the same day. One was an older man who had been out on a walk with his wife. She was showing him around the patio and all the areas of the hospital when he just slumped over in his wheelchair inside the physical therapy room. The other was a thirty-something-year-old Romanian lady who just stopped breathing in the middle of the night.<br /><br />One young girl who had been on our floor for almost a month contracted bacterial meningitis. The really contagious kind that almost always kills the infected person. (The same infection that killed that girl from East in high school. remember?) Well, this girl was my patient 4 days in a row before they found out what was wrong... What if I had gotten it from her!? While I had a few days off, she coded and last I heard, she was sent to the ICU. Scary. I liked her.<br /><br />One particularly bad morning, I stepped in HUMAN poop and got it in the little crevices of my shoe. Yeah, it's a lot like dog poop but without the grass... and no, I don't ever wear those shoes inside my house.<br /><br />That same day, I took care of a lady who had such a bad bowel obstruction that she was literally throwing up her poo. Dark, thick, and SO smelly. As disgusting as that was, I really felt bad for her. I mean, could you imagine??? Throwing up is bad enough as it is!<br /><br />But in the midst of all the <span style="font-style: italic;">crap</span> I deal with at work (pun intended), there are those people or those days that really make my job worth it. Like the time when I ordered 15 root beer floats for the family who wanted to toast to their father who had just passed away; or the time when a patient announced to us that she had named her tumor "Tina Tumor"; or the many times when patients who have gone into remission stop by to say hello and show us their new hair.<br /><br />This week I met an adorable couple in their 60's. They are from Missouri but have been in Salt Lake since February, living with relatives while the husband gets his cancer treatment. He has stage 4 Melanoma that has spread throughout his body. They know he'll die soon, but they are so determined to make the rest of their life together perfect. They are that model couple that you hope to grow up to be. The wife <span style="font-style: italic;">loved</span> to talk, but in her case, I actually enjoyed it. We chatted about sewing and family and Missouri and school. She told me how scared she was to become a widow, and to lose the man who has protected her for 45 years.<br /><br />We see a lot of people die and many times we don't even think twice about it. But when someone lets you into their life and you can really connect with them, that's when death seems so awful--almost unfair.<br /><br />Despite what I might say about my job on most days, I do actually love the work that I do. It makes me appreciate my life and my health and my beliefs. I just hope that I never get cancer.<br /><br />Cancer really sucks.Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00243850300323787879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204520592898014030.post-61043172787397701732011-06-25T18:50:00.013-06:002011-06-29T15:48:02.074-06:00Liz's Wedding Festivities<div style="text-align: center;">The month of June has been full of celebrations! We had so much fun! I loved showing Daniel around all the places I used to visit with my family. Daniel loved it so much that he wants to move there. (although he said he would have to create some climbing routes somewhere on the island...)<br /><br />This is the view from our hotel right on the beach. If any of you plan a trip to Maui but don't want to spend a bunch on the hotel, stay here!! I was a little disappointed at how much people charge for a stupid bag, between 50 and 100 dollars! So I decided that I would make one. I planned out what it would look like and what I needed then I went to the fabric store and got this:<br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjowsXNlJUxff-1HgFR15d71w9XH4vjkjzcfEbNceVJBqQEFfjmXd3xnv4KP5g26c6EmO0k7LtLIa0sjYjkTA9UOPTmGvR96CdGADn-zj3gMi2Ok4JAUPKmZM80AtRpE2wiQvNPBp1rXj6b/s1600/IMG_0262.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjowsXNlJUxff-1HgFR15d71w9XH4vjkjzcfEbNceVJBqQEFfjmXd3xnv4KP5g26c6EmO0k7LtLIa0sjYjkTA9UOPTmGvR96CdGADn-zj3gMi2Ok4JAUPKmZM80AtRpE2wiQvNPBp1rXj6b/s400/IMG_0262.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603335744496873794" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">Just guess how much I ended up spending... 50 bucks!!! So much for saving money! Although, now that I'm done I can see that I bought way more fabric than I really needed and I only used two zippers instead of four.<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJCWN5a1cuvbzB7YLUF_zXEavHXFY3y-xQBVJW5Qg0MxbJMfMo54UpkRpjJ5HW7a9Vq8w99XzTSPnz7SpRTtJnTqIbOSJSYY6cXWY0yFW8ryfu46T68slXY8mtIMi0hNgvXBz2lrG8LWxa/s1600/IMG_0269.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJCWN5a1cuvbzB7YLUF_zXEavHXFY3y-xQBVJW5Qg0MxbJMfMo54UpkRpjJ5HW7a9Vq8w99XzTSPnz7SpRTtJnTqIbOSJSYY6cXWY0yFW8ryfu46T68slXY8mtIMi0hNgvXBz2lrG8LWxa/s400/IMG_0269.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603335746286389522" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">I think I ran into problems at every step of the way. I broke my last sewing machine needle with the thick fabric, but then the heavy duty needle that I bought wasn't cooperating with the machine settings. Eventually I bought another set of "all-purpose" needles that seemed to work like a charm until I bent one on a straight pin. The FOURTH needle didn't work because I put it in backwards (stupid me), and finally I worked through all the kinks.<br /><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWo6WxhWZl9e2F4QWO8qwAEK_ZtIaqhFyVqmpEw7u4wC0wWlwrxZAtHk5R1v0q7G_H66p13PpaPU2eHA_XyWA1JpxROtlCeXeW2fcfFSr0-zxDk_PNh4WeJRwXgAWakOz_uTpV5MpWWXnh/s1600/IMG_0271.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWo6WxhWZl9e2F4QWO8qwAEK_ZtIaqhFyVqmpEw7u4wC0wWlwrxZAtHk5R1v0q7G_H66p13PpaPU2eHA_XyWA1JpxROtlCeXeW2fcfFSr0-zxDk_PNh4WeJRwXgAWakOz_uTpV5MpWWXnh/s400/IMG_0271.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603335759452361042" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">I experimented with different kinds of pockets on the inside.<br /><span style="font-size:78%;">Sorry, this next picture is fuzzy. </span><br /><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguHTtF_Awh-QJPgeHf4NjNW_lnYlhd4RLkoMjaZcDA86-jMthYNJ9ltzHtaPGyTRLsWCS-5fwokUBc7AsYC5PLD7fRzWbOlr6WBuA4ycOb6wzjevSyI1JToa1frgx3qvryAasXhjeZDWFh/s1600/IMG_0270.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguHTtF_Awh-QJPgeHf4NjNW_lnYlhd4RLkoMjaZcDA86-jMthYNJ9ltzHtaPGyTRLsWCS-5fwokUBc7AsYC5PLD7fRzWbOlr6WBuA4ycOb6wzjevSyI1JToa1frgx3qvryAasXhjeZDWFh/s400/IMG_0270.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603335753233055746" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">I have a weakness for big, bold prints while I'm at the fabric store, then I bring them home and wish I had gotten something more neutral. This time, I tried to find something that I wouldn't get sick of but they didn't really have a good selection of canvas. So big flower print it is. I also wish I would have made it a bit stiffer so it wouldn't sag. I blame that one on the girl cutting my fabric who was too lazy to open the bag of thicker interfacing. oh well. When I fill it full of stuff I think it will work nicely.<br /><br />On a side note, Daniel's birthday was on Sunday! He spent the weekend mountain biking with his brothers down south. We celebrated when he got home. For the past little while I've been telling my patients at work that he was already 24 in hopes of avoiding the people-get-married-so-young-these-days talk. Now when they ask, I don't have to lie! ha ha<br /><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdmUpaBH1r9BuzMzrUR9iaO6BoRqdWYz6vXpCc8cMPGfvij7MZ4X8NlvIigm-nCWH9Azby65JVdt4vHG2ypqP9b6pDZcdFz7VrGlfSStkN8weh8lRRGLg1S2B9ZROQ4MxymrbADj-sP54W/s1600/IMG_0266.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdmUpaBH1r9BuzMzrUR9iaO6BoRqdWYz6vXpCc8cMPGfvij7MZ4X8NlvIigm-nCWH9Azby65JVdt4vHG2ypqP9b6pDZcdFz7VrGlfSStkN8weh8lRRGLg1S2B9ZROQ4MxymrbADj-sP54W/s400/IMG_0266.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603336218869419538" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:78%;">Daniel doesn't know how to smile in pictures. </span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Those are new bike tires. In fact, they were out of almost <span style="font-style: italic;">every</span> brand that makes Greek yogurt. By the way, I've been loving this new Greek yogurt craze because it really is better than normal yogurt. So delicious! So I picked up a bunch of flavors in this LIBERTE <span style="font-size:78%;">(with an accent)</span> brand. With flavors like coconut and apple crisp, I was pretty intrigued.<br /><br />The next morning I tried the coconut one. After the first bite, I was in heaven. It was literally the best yogurt I have ever tasted. I scarfed down the whole thing and I became a little curious. what could possibly make this yogurt so GOOD?<br /><br />So I looked at the nutrition facts...<br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size:180%;">dun<br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:180%;">dun </span><br /></div><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size:180%;">dun<br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: left;">...and that's when I discovered why it was the last brand on the shelves. <br /><br />a whopping <span style="font-size:180%;">12 grams of fat!<span style="font-size:100%;"><br /><br /></span></span><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size:180%;"><span style="font-size:100%;">It was like eating ice cream with my granola. </span></span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">after learning that deadly news, what could I possibly do with the rest of the yogurts???<br />well, I ate them. All of them. And I'm going to be really tempted to buy them again. THAT'S how good they were.<br /><span style="font-size:180%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"></span></span></div></div></div></div></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00243850300323787879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204520592898014030.post-64870818399699853652011-03-23T10:58:00.004-06:002011-03-23T11:28:10.485-06:00the sad truth<div style="text-align: center;">I bought a gym membership this week.<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I've been meaning to get one for a while but I've been SUPER lazy this winter. <span style="font-size:78%;">(Last Saturday is evidence of that, when I did not get off the couch all day unless it was to get more food to eat.)</span>Then after our trip to Florida, Daniel saw this picture and said something that I would have been really mad at, had it not been true...<br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWkQA-kmh38w_z3R_KWUKsB1Hptiimib78KDwhcgnc7FblUcmw6DbyI-v9u7g9lzAnlYUU__XAWIqakypaKW7KB7AXyUa0IDEMzG7I1cEP-CTETR3Mm8gyKyIqNogsk-r9zfZvqwhATJQ-/s1600/IMG_0240.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWkQA-kmh38w_z3R_KWUKsB1Hptiimib78KDwhcgnc7FblUcmw6DbyI-v9u7g9lzAnlYUU__XAWIqakypaKW7KB7AXyUa0IDEMzG7I1cEP-CTETR3Mm8gyKyIqNogsk-r9zfZvqwhATJQ-/s320/IMG_0240.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587322396428434274" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">He said, <span style="font-size:180%;">"Wow, we are so fat. I mean, why in the world would you tell your wife that she needs to lose weight. Jerk.<br /><br />Really, this picture <span style="font-style: italic;">is</span> pretty awful. Daniel looks fine, but my legs look like munchkin stumps.<br />And the life jackets don't really help either.<br /><br />So, I got the hint. Or rather, the stab, and I got to work.<br /><br />I've had my but kicked three days in a row now, but it really feels good. The best part about the gym is that they have classes. As a dancer and a swimmer growing up, the only way I know how to push myself is to have someone else push me.<br />My reward this weekend will be a nice massage that I've been waiting to use.<br /><br />My motivation??<br />Well, besides being attractive for my snooty little husband <span style="font-size:85%;">(joke)</span>, Maui is quickly approaching. And so is summertime. And then there is that family history of high cholesterol and heart problems... but I'm too young to worry about that, right?<br /><br /><br /></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00243850300323787879noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204520592898014030.post-53605005950799489442011-03-19T18:02:00.010-06:002011-03-19T19:09:00.476-06:00The Sunshine State<div style="text-align: center;">Our recent travels took us to Pensacola Beach. Here's a little update!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size:180%;">School</span><br /></div>This semester is a cake walk for me. I'm taking an EMT class that is practically a joke, and a drawing class that I really enjoy. I've had a lot of free time on my hands and I think I've been wasting most of it. Daniel on the other hand, always overloads himself and then suffers all semester...<br /><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size:180%;">House<br /></span><div style="text-align: left;">We love it here. A few weeks ago we bought a pool table for that large dining room we didn't know what to do with. I was skeptical at first, but now I love it! Other than the occasional unwanted guests, its been totally worth it. Also, our renters are moving in this weekend. Hooray! It will definitely an adjustment having someone in our basement, but when I consider the extra money that it brings in, I can suck it up. I can't wait until spring when I can plant my new vegetable garden.<br /><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size:180%;">Projects<br /></span><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size:100%;">You'd think with all my free time I would be sewing all kinds of things. Well, that's not really the case. But I have started 3 new ruffled clutch wallets for the boutique my family is planning for the fall. Stay tuned<br /></span><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size:180%;">Vacation</span><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Next week we're taking a little vacation that we can't really afford. Daniel's best friend from Tennessee is getting married in Navarre Beach, Florida. We debated for a long time whether to go. Airfare is so expensive and so is gas... but Daniel just happened to find really cheap tickets today sooooo we're going! it'll be our little spring break.<br /><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size:180%;">Money-sucker<br /></span><div style="text-align: left;">A few days ago we took my car in to get the timing belt and the water pump changed. That turned into fixing the thermometer. The next day I went to get an oil change and they pointed out that my tires were unsafe to be driving on. New tires are NOT cheap... I hate cars. oh, and I just realized that my plates are expired.<br /></div><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size:180%;"><span style="font-size:100%;"></span>Pilates<br /></span><div style="text-align: left;">This week I added a little pilates workout into my routine. The first day I did it, I was a little disappointed because it didn't feel like it did a thing. But when I woke up the next morning and I was totally sore, I decided that maybe it did do something after all. Its nice to switch things up a bit. Otherwise, working out gets boring. And did I mention that the pilates workout came from Netflix?? Awesome.<br /><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size:180%;">Desperate Housewives<br /></span><div style="text-align: left;">I hate to admit how addicted I am. Its not even that good of a show...<br /></div><br /></div></div><br /></div></div></div></div><br /></div><br /></div></div><br /></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00243850300323787879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204520592898014030.post-77538110818528098802011-02-03T10:20:00.003-07:002011-02-03T11:46:04.398-07:00doggy dilemmaOkay, I need some input.<br />Daniel and I keep going through this cycle of wanting a dog... and then not. We just cant decide if it would work with our lifestyle. (you know, work and school all day long)<br />Also, like everything else, we just cant seem to agree on what would be best.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">Daniel hates small, yappy dogs<br /><div style="text-align: right;">I hate super hyper dogs that jump on you<br /><div style="text-align: left;">Daniel wants an outside dog<br /><div style="text-align: right;">I think outside dogs stink worse than inside ones<br /><div style="text-align: left;">Daniel wants a big dog<br /><div style="text-align: right;">I want a medium sized dog<br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">One thing we DO agree on though, is the fact that dogs pee and throw up on your stuff, they are time consuming and they cost a lot of money. And if you get a puppy, then you have to train it. They also are a pain when you need to go out of town and you don't know what to do with them...<br /><br />So after all those cons, do we REALLY want a dog? I mean, they are cute and loyal and it would make me feel more safe when I'm home alone. But is it worth it?<br /><br />And then there's the question of what <span style="font-style: italic;">kind</span> of dog to get.<br /><br /></div></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://cdn-www.dailypuppy.com/media/dogs/anonymous/tintin_samoyed13.jpg_w450.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 347px; height: 300px;" src="http://cdn-www.dailypuppy.com/media/dogs/anonymous/tintin_samoyed13.jpg_w450.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">Samoyeds are super cute as puppies and adults and they are very mild tempered, but can you say HAIR?! There would be a thick coat of white hair on everything in the house! oh, and then there's the fact that their tails curl up and you can always see their butt hole. I hate that.<br /><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRlaRP4b7ssRUTRDTu3nBdIu0ZU0VY2GJ-hEpHxWFhRGVsQtjmRhA&t=1"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 258px; height: 195px;" src="http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRlaRP4b7ssRUTRDTu3nBdIu0ZU0VY2GJ-hEpHxWFhRGVsQtjmRhA&t=1" alt="" border="0" /></a> Newfoundlands are nanny dogs!! (think Peter Pan) The puppies are adorable, adults are not quite as adorable, and once again, HAIR! They are also quite large.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/images/Labrador-Retriever-Puppies.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/images/Labrador-Retriever-Puppies.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />Labs are the go-to dog. They are cute and friendly. But they are way hyper. Daniel's brother has a black lab that is out of control... I don't think I want one of my own.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://cdn-www.dailypuppy.com/media/dogs/anonymous/coda_swiss.jpg_w450.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 321px; height: 441px;" src="http://cdn-www.dailypuppy.com/media/dogs/anonymous/coda_swiss.jpg_w450.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a></div><br />A swiss mountain dog is cute, has short hair and they aren't too big. I don't know much else about them though.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.pluspets.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Great-Pyrenees1.jpeg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 425px; height: 282px;" src="http://www.pluspets.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Great-Pyrenees1.jpeg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br />There is a great pyrenees therapy dog that comes to the hospital every Friday. Shes such a gorgeous and mellow dog that I thought I might one one of my own. But by definition, a therapy dog must be clean, mellow, and friendly... who knows what mine would turn out like. plus, they are huge and hairy.<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />Give me your input! what breeds do you have experience with? could we handle a dog?! If you open the door using the key (rather than the clicker) the alarm goes off. If you open up the trunk when the car is locked, the alarm goes off. A couple weeks ago, I was shoveling the driveway and I tapped the bumper with the shovel. The alarm went off. when I ran inside to get the key, I slipped in the garage and very nearly did a back flop. <br /><br />And for some reason, ever since we moved, the alarm seems to be getting even MORE sensitive. Three times now, I've woken up in the morning to the ear-splitting sound of the car alarm....its such a startling way to wake up. As far as I know, nothing sets it off. I look out the window and its just sitting there, screaming. So I learned to park it IN the garage.<br /><br />Last night it was all wet with rain, so I left it out. This morning it was set off by the rumble of the garbage truck.... niiice.<br /><br />All the old ladies in the neighborhood must be having a heart attack every time it goes off. If not, then it wakes them up early in the morning and makes them angry. How embarrassing.<br /><br />I really would love to kill the alarm. After all, its never actually saved the car from any danger.Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00243850300323787879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204520592898014030.post-24058881121128471982011-01-10T21:50:00.002-07:002011-01-10T22:31:52.726-07:00getting settledI feel like I didn't even get a Christmas break from school. We've been SO busy. We moved out of our apartment, spent New Years weekend at the cabin, and we've been moving into our house ever since! There were a few little hiccups along the way (basement flooding) but we are loving it here. Between the 100 trips to Home Depot and unpacking boxes, we still don't have any pictures. Sorry.<br /><br />The to-do list: RUGS! (in like, every room)<br /> Hang pictures<br /> Make curtains for the bedrooms<br /> New bed linens<br /> Set up extra room/office/sewing room<br /> Paint some pretty colors on the walls (probably next summer)<br /> Buy new bathroom vanity<br /> More furniture<br /><br />Anyway, like you care about all that...<br /><br />I promise we'll get pictures soon. And one day we'll have you all over for a little gathering<br /><br />Happy spring semester! oh, and wish me luck this weekend. On Thursday they decided to rent snowmobiles and I tagged along. It was fun for the first few hours, but its hard to stay warm on the back of a snowmobile when its less than 10 degrees outside. As the sun started to set, I became quite cold and miserable... but it was an adventure all the same. That was cold day # 1.<br /><br />Cold day #2 occurred in Wendover. Why the heck was I in Wendover? Well, let me tell you... I was doing my open water scuba certification...<span style="font-size:180%;"> </span><span style="font-size:180%;">in the middle</span><span style="font-size:180%;"> of</span><span style="font-size:180%;"> winter. </span><div style="text-align: right;"><br />Whose bright idea was that??<br /><br /></div>Okay, okay, it was my fault for putting it off until the last minute. I could have done it back in October.<br /><br />It's a good thing I had Daniel's warm Russia coat <span style="font-size:85%;">(that just so happened to be left in the truck)</span> and a beanie because it was 25 degrees outside. I quickly changed into the full body wetsuit and assembled all my gear. I pulled off my boots and switched to flip flops at the last minute and with 100 pounds of stuff on my back, I trekked the 100 yard boardwalk up to the edge of the water.<br /><br />The so-called hot spring felt good on my frozen toes, but at a whopping 74 degrees, it didn't last long. I shivered and shook for at least an hour until we had done our two dives of the day.<br /><br />I thought the walk TO the water was bad, but the walk back was even worse. My flip flops were turning into ice cubes as I walked. When I got back to the car, I tore off my gear and my (worthless) wetsuit and jumped in the car with the heat blasting.<br /><br />Back at the hotel, I took a hot bath. Its weird how tiring it is to shiver. Every muscle was tense and sore.<br /><br />Cold day #3 began at 7:00 a.m. as I looked out the window of the hotel and saw 4 fresh inches of snow on my car.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: right;">Of course the one time it snows in Wendover, I had to be there.<br /></div><br />So I got up, lugged all my gear back out the the car and drove to the lake. Because of the snow, the air was slightly warmer than before. Probably low 30's. But the water turned out to be much colder at 68 degrees. My oxygen tank was covered in ice, just from sitting in the back of the truck on the way over<span style="font-size:78%;">(see picture below)<span style="font-size:100%;">!!</span></span> This time I was smart enough to wear my boots and my beanie to walk out the water. Once again, I shivered and shook through the two dives and swam to the edge to get out.<br /><br />You know when you are totally dreading something because you know how awful it's going to be?<br /><br />That's how I felt. I was all ready to get out, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I knew I couldn't put my boots back on because they would get full of water. I was hoping that the snow was packed down enough so that I wouldn't get lots to snow on my feet. I was planning the escape that would be the least painful.<br /><br />I climbed out with the tank on my back and slid my flip flops on. The snow stuck to my wet feet all the way back. That was the longest 100 yards I have ever walked. Once I was in my car again with the heat blasting, I was just happy thinking that I was done and I would never have to do that ever again.<br /><br />So now that you are bored with my long sob story, here are a few pictures to illustrate it:<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAQ433YwY6R3CGmte6hW2i08Q-vYyY3I36TZJr4uKCdJyX9ulXgIo0TONiPZ6EqkBYUwsT8wXUb_2ZgeSK8Afs8Oa94WyHB2MQsDgh5zpiIwZRhWw3EwcBHrUeMwXUJFm-68nI1f_uTvWO/s1600/IMG_3652.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAQ433YwY6R3CGmte6hW2i08Q-vYyY3I36TZJr4uKCdJyX9ulXgIo0TONiPZ6EqkBYUwsT8wXUb_2ZgeSK8Afs8Oa94WyHB2MQsDgh5zpiIwZRhWw3EwcBHrUeMwXUJFm-68nI1f_uTvWO/s400/IMG_3652.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552585980361561794" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;">My dive buddy and I, getting ready to go.</span><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjouMinniqtfro5VDslnJM1qRV-bN9i9gOMIyOqPsESClrDtijrAzRWuaFz1xli-FrwCc_kqH3Un_v5wG8Lbi3iFO25jZY_8JTK8DXxVGugqmfB5nr59Xh-f1yX8E5WkQfKj-Bc1pNaLGO7/s1600/IMG_3651.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjouMinniqtfro5VDslnJM1qRV-bN9i9gOMIyOqPsESClrDtijrAzRWuaFz1xli-FrwCc_kqH3Un_v5wG8Lbi3iFO25jZY_8JTK8DXxVGugqmfB5nr59Xh-f1yX8E5WkQfKj-Bc1pNaLGO7/s400/IMG_3651.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552585972913947202" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;">Ice-covered tank. It was everything we wanted and in a great area. We offered and were rejected. It was a little disappointing but decided the house wasn't worth any more than what we offered. We left it behind and, luckily, found an even better house.<br /><br />Basement apartment, fully updated throughout, big windows, big backyard, covered deck, attached garage, quiet neighborhood... the list goes on. It doesn't need any work.<br /><br />So we called the listing agent who said he was expecting offers that day. We ran home and sent ours in.<br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><br />FOUR HOURS LATER we heard back.<br /></span><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="font-size:180%;">Offer accepted!!<br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="file:///C:/Users/CHRIST%7E1/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot-1.png" alt="" />Our lender said we could close on the house by the end of the month if everything goes well.<br /><br />We are SO excited and hope that all of you wonderful friends join us for a celebration once we are settled in!<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></div></div><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /><br /></span></div></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00243850300323787879noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204520592898014030.post-86859120271644881892010-12-11T23:44:00.005-07:002010-12-12T00:18:21.876-07:00O Christmas Tree<div style="text-align: center;">We now have a Christmas tradition of cutting down our tree. Two years and counting! This year's tree is perfectly symmetrical, it was love at first sight.<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHL_fc8ZuqoCwCgNHJoeQQSXxO-RixWs8tdyQTut8cOwNqMeT1VbNTgwG4te6XjujeAhIFAeHq1_WDVFmFFrnUoII-IYO0iBTdZdvIgwfNvB3XrCCRCcpqaySKEqn_5RPsGvDnBU1Q9-Vf/s1600/IMG_3630.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHL_fc8ZuqoCwCgNHJoeQQSXxO-RixWs8tdyQTut8cOwNqMeT1VbNTgwG4te6XjujeAhIFAeHq1_WDVFmFFrnUoII-IYO0iBTdZdvIgwfNvB3XrCCRCcpqaySKEqn_5RPsGvDnBU1Q9-Vf/s400/IMG_3630.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549686059434897938" border="0" /></a>This year there was enough snow that we had to snowshoe to find a tree. It was much more fun that way.<br /></div><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwG_WoKOSDc4NgQGvRto52GAEGwKLPq6ueFhCMub3MhJzgFn7tkg4Sq1PrzdKQbEigY4hZ5IYNmlVNKnhDiCPzCyoqlxZFUrPVXoM4uWumyt27HXFQjCL8cou94EzKpd5HDimcfpQTxW90/s1600/IMG_3627.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwG_WoKOSDc4NgQGvRto52GAEGwKLPq6ueFhCMub3MhJzgFn7tkg4Sq1PrzdKQbEigY4hZ5IYNmlVNKnhDiCPzCyoqlxZFUrPVXoM4uWumyt27HXFQjCL8cou94EzKpd5HDimcfpQTxW90/s400/IMG_3627.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549683987600875938" border="0" /></a><br />Holy cow the pine needles are like little knives with burning poison on each of them. When you get poked, your skin turns rashy and irritated. I had to wear thick leather gloves to decorate it.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpjFKxBeRIsLWf8TIsZdf_HmngVhFl0VP3lwP2uisl0b8P9_fJY9qkBUvh7GkAqU0wcfU-5aC6iu6KArma6DdQI27whD2KKg0CH1NnDvLhS__bb5RD-tCSOWCCOEZTXyD-_URz5FxCk3yv/s1600/IMG_3632.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpjFKxBeRIsLWf8TIsZdf_HmngVhFl0VP3lwP2uisl0b8P9_fJY9qkBUvh7GkAqU0wcfU-5aC6iu6KArma6DdQI27whD2KKg0CH1NnDvLhS__bb5RD-tCSOWCCOEZTXyD-_URz5FxCk3yv/s400/IMG_3632.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549683988184346354" border="0" /></a><br /></div>We got it home and set it up a few days later. Then a few days after that we decorated it and I realized that we never put water in the tree stand... smart. But don't worry, Daniel drilled some holes in the side so it can still get the water. Hopefully it doesn't die early.<br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjek075LsU-1nM1RaLDz4hyphenhyphenXX-WE6ItccXEO0yKb_EnUsgsg_Bd8jSolb7j-gBAccGyL_knaUzPjTPDFe13qrnl2fyaMJ-RKlJSrMDl5zXpkNqh2TczTr2g3Jfhce7cLJCsglxAODnrPMq6/s1600/IMG_3649.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjek075LsU-1nM1RaLDz4hyphenhyphenXX-WE6ItccXEO0yKb_EnUsgsg_Bd8jSolb7j-gBAccGyL_knaUzPjTPDFe13qrnl2fyaMJ-RKlJSrMDl5zXpkNqh2TczTr2g3Jfhce7cLJCsglxAODnrPMq6/s400/IMG_3649.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5549683998991793314" border="0" /></a><br />Another tradition we have is making ornaments for the tree. We're totally addicted. <span style="font-size:85%;">(right now we're watching Bones! so good.)</span><br /><br />Then, last week Daniel decided that he needed to buy a game for the xBox. As if he doesn't have enough hobbies already! Whatever... So we went to Game Stop at what must have been the busiest time because the line went all the way from the counter to the door.<br /><div style="text-align: right;"><span style="display: block;" id="formatbar_Buttons"><span class=" down" style="display: block;" id="formatbar_JustifyLeft" title="Align Left" onmouseover="ButtonHoverOn(this);" onmouseout="ButtonHoverOff(this);" onmouseup="" onmousedown="CheckFormatting(event);FormatbarButton('richeditorframe', this, 10);ButtonMouseDown(this);"><img src="http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif" alt="Align Left" class="gl_align_left" border="0" /></span></span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">...and by the way, Game Stop has more gross, un-showered people than the DI does...<br /></span></div></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />And that was that. He has stayed up till 2 am most nights since he got the game.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">But I guess I can't complain. At least he's not out all night <span style="font-size:100%;">climbing large rocks</span><br /><br />I just don't know what I'll do if he decides we need cable with all the ESPN channels. I think that's where I'll draw the line.<br /></div><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span><br /></div><br /></div></div>Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00243850300323787879noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6204520592898014030.post-21245710154089574472010-11-04T23:59:00.002-06:002010-11-05T00:15:23.617-06:00I'm not ready for this<span style="font-size:180%;">We put an offer in on a house yesterday</span>. <span style="font-size:130%;">Yes, a real house.</span><br />I'm quite literally freaking out. This house needs a <span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" >ton</span> of work. Part of me is really excited and the other part secretly hopes that they don't except our offer...<br />I'm torn.<br />I'm scared of big commitments.<br />And I hate waiting for an answer.Christinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00243850300323787879noreply@blogger.com2
